I have found it quite helpful in the past few years to have a driving coach with me, someone I know and trust completely. This person is not a driver’s education inductor but someone who I know is confident behind the wheel. Having a driving partner or a trustee as I call it has greatly helped me to get through some of the oddest moments I never thought I would face during my adult driving years such as when I get anxious driving. Even if I am just a little concerned about my own driving skills or a certain area of town, being able to pull over and have support on the other end of the phone does numbers to boost me into wanting to get back into the driver’s seat.

I thought I had kicked this “bad habit” and my fear of driving was over. That was almost the case until I was in a near fatal car wreck and all of the past fears came rushing back to me like is discussed here. Right now it has been a little over two years since the wreck. I am thankful for those close to me that understand this is not just something I am making up in my head but something that commonly effects many drivers out on the roads.

As we approach the holiday season I know that many people like me will attempt to only drive when they have to, I should say “my older self”. I am trying to get out more and learn to drive without my trustee but having one in a pinch does help.
